Tribal Tuesday

Heavy, deep pounding drums, rythymic jolting, guttural tones, scary shadows and earthly tones.
The tribal range allows you to go a little wild
At the basis of the range is Nature, natural products, natural colours, wood, clay, seeds, leather. Although the pieces are large and outrageous, it does allow you to feel bold, feel strong and capable of beating a worthy foe in the jungle that is your life. The masks can be considered as talismans, shields, protectors, decorative or simply the coolest thing you’ve ever put around your neck. The great thing about the clay is, it is re-mouldable – if you don’t like it, you can soak it in water and you're back to square one - a lump of clay. With the Elms Creative range I believe that you are wearing a piece of art, when it comes to clay products you are also wearing a bit of my... fingerprints. They feature throughout all, showing they were handcrafted and each an individual.
The Happy Chappy.
When I was moulding this guy, I was only channeling good thoughts. I love his little smile, every-time I wear this little guy I always have someone comment on him. To be worn to put good vibes out into the world!!
The Aztec Calendar -
I love South America and hope to travel there one day in the not too distant future. I love how raw and ritualistic the art and people of the Aztecs were.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) - A brilliant painter who began his work in Graffiti under the tag SAMO. Came to the artworld;s eye in the 80's. However the excesses of the 80's were too much for him and he died of an overdose. Thankfully he left many works for us to admire and adore.
The billiant Julie Taymor, sculpting "Scar's" headpiece for The Lion King. Julieis one of my idols. To create art and works that are at her calibre is a true dream.

As Elms Creative expands on down the line, I hope to do puppets and wall decorations etc.
By working & exploring the medium of clay, I have gained a wonderful knowledge & relationship of what it is capable of...

A bowl of happiness!

Sunday at the Beach

Edward Hopper, the American artist, spent a lot of his life on the West Coast of the United States especially around Cape Cod. I get the image of Cape Cod with beautiful coast lines, expensive properties white sun hats, crisp linen pants, grassy dunes & white wine Spritzer’s. This beach is inspiring.

However I grew up in Nth QLD and had family holidays at Kurramine beach. I have very lovely memories of playing card games with Nana, drag netting for bait with Pop and my Mum.
I remember the smell of the canvas awning outside the caravan and how your skin feels after spending the day swimming in the ocean with your little sister.

This piece comes from the “Ocean Range”, it’s called “Sunsets in the West” and reminds me of my times spent in Perth, where the sun actually sets over the ocean.
(Something quite odd for those of us living on the West Coast) The piece is made of Shell and Glass and is finished with a chain and large parrot clasp.

From the West Coast

I am currently on holiday in Perth, catching up with friends and family and having a lovely time. Perth is an interesting place and one that I find that can be very inspiring. At first it appears that the art scene is minimal or hidden, but after a little while it reveals itself.
Soemtimes it pops up in the smaller suburbs or in little stores that are off the regular trail. For example; I have stumbled upon a set of stores named "Pidgeonhole". There are three of them in the heart of Perth and they are lovely. They are all unique in their own way and stock the most interesting and original products I have seen in a long time. They have had quite an affect on me over here, it's been nice. I like the crispness of the stores, the soundtrack playing and the pure originality of the products. I recommend them to anyone who is looking for a great gift or something wonderful for themselves. You can find them at http://www.pidgeonhole.com.au/

I have also been poking around the back streets and have found some great artworks.
Two have really knocked my sock off.

The piece on the left is on the back wall of the shopping centre in Mt Lawley, I have nick named him Rupert and love him dearly. The piece in the right was in a carpark in Subiaco. I have recently discovered the work of American artist Stormie Mills and I have an inkling that it MAY be his work. He recently exhibited in a gallery just down from this carpark on Hay St.
I also visited my favourite bar in Perth, the Hula Bula Bar. A cocktail bar with a 50's Tiki lounge feel. They
make the greatest Chi Chi's ever!! Visit them at http://www.hulabulabar.com/
I have had a lot of fun here in Perth and am looking forward to getting back to Brisbane to get moving on the "What's New Pussycat? Project" and to add a few more pics from my time in Perth.
Hugs from the West Side.....

What's New Pussycat?

What's new pussycat?
Well what is new is an invitation to have an exhibit at a wonderful 2 day event raising money for a great charity and a chance to sell my wares to wonderful fabulous ladies!
"What’s New, Pussycat?” is a glamorous shopping extravaganza for women. It is an opportunity for them to shop, and sample food, wine, and new products in a fun and interactive environment.
Upon entry to the event guests will be given a shopping bag filled with free gifts and services for them to use after the event. And this is your opportunity to promote your products and/or service by becoming a booth holder at the event. The event will support all-Australian and boutique businesses and that’s why we need businesses such as yours as booth holders, so together we can give guests and opportunity to see products and services that may not know how access! The event is on Friday 14th of May from 5pm - 10pm and Saturday 15th of May from 10pm - 5pm. http://www.whatsnewpussycat.com.au/

So after the thinking music had stopped I decided that it was a wonderful oppurtunity and I jumped on board. This past weekend has seen a craft marathon of mass proportions. I started on Friday night at about 6pm and finished at 7:30 on Sunday night. It involved setting up a trial booth and displaying the stock I have and working out the extra stock that I need to make.
At this stage it is looking good and I have a very nice to-do list.I am heading off to Perth for 11 days for Easter so I will able to do some of the paperwork over there, but can't build any jewellery. I will use my time wisely over there and be ready to jump in when I return in early April. I am very excited about the event as I feel I am getting back on track with my plans for the label. After What's New Pussycat?
I will be looking to join BrisStyle, "BrisStyle is a cooperative group of talented Australian artists, crafters and artisans who call the Brisbane area home. BrisStyle formed in March 2008 through a shared love of creating beautiful things, which members sell on Etsy.com. More than 18 months on the group has significantly swelled in numbers, and is a happy family for those who understand that little shiver of excitement that comes from producing handmade goods."

Turning a new Blog Page.

I have neglected my blog.
To be honest i never gave it a real chance. I could sit here and list the many numerous excuses for such neglect, but truth be known... I was a little scared.
Fearing that I would have to follow a strict routine and blog frequently, I felt I had smothered the joy out of it. The idea of having a routine for this blog has now gone by the way side and I am now going to blog when I feel it. I feel I need to recap as there has been quite a few months since the last post. I seemed to be going along quite successfuly with Elms Creative, loading jewellery on Etsy, Facebook and Made It. For those new to the craft/ internet scene, Etsy is an amazing website that focuses only on handy crafts. Crafters can have a page on Etsy and display and sell their craft. Etsy also presents "how to's" which are fantastic. One can sit down and watch them for four hours if one was so inclined. Made It is an Australian equivalent of Etsy and it is also fantastic. Facebook has proved to be the most successful so far, as you can tap into your own resources of friends straight away and get a great fan base. So electronically there are heaps of options out there, above are only a few.
Towards the last few months of last year, a very good friend of mine and I landed a gig playing at a pub at Coolangatta, west of the Gold Coast and so my focus was re-directed and a lot of my energy was put into getting our guitar act into something acceptable. It was a great creative distraction, but I did feel that I was neglecting my precious little jewellery thing. So after the new year the gig fell through (it helps if the owner pays the manager... It's a long story) I am now finding my direction and my focus again and it feels great.
I spent the Christmas with my family in Far North Queensland and worked on clay masks - for the tribal range and firing glass - for the 750's range. I also spent some time finding soem new inspiration for the line and took some great photos of some "interesting things"
that may find their way into my designs in the future.
In the last few weeks I have been attempting to down size my belongings and craft supplies and this is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I have a lot of craft "things", much to my own (and past room mates) surprise. So in helping with this down sizing I am on the band wagon to build more jewellery and use up the stock that I have on hand.
So let's get rolling on that shall we??
